Technology > Android Achieves 10 Billion Milestone
December 14, 2011

The world is starting to see green- a little green robot that is - as Google’s Android Market reaches incredible numbers in app downloads worldwide. According to a recent report on the official Google blog, downloads for the Android’s many apps have reached more than 10 billion, and this number continues to grow at a whopping rate of one billion app downloads per month. This enormous figure started out at 4.5 billion in May to a considerably large 6 billion just six months ago, and the growth just keeps on going. It seems that Android users just can’t get enough of the Android Market’s plethora of apps, which is why in celebration of this great achievement, Google is teaming up with some of the Android developers (some who used to be web developers) who made this all possible in making plenty of apps available at an unbelievably low price. Available only until the 16th of this month, Google is releasing a new set of awesome apps everyday for only 10 cents each. Director for the Android Developer Ecosystem Eric Chu encourages all users to check in for the next few days to see what their developer partners have come up with, and is hopeful for their accelerating growth continuing on to 2012.

App development is like traditional web design and web development in that programmers need to tie together design and functionality to roll-out an app that runs in a certain environment, e.g. Android phones.

App Crazy Statistics

According to a graphical representation on Chu’s Android-developers blog, the Android store’s success comes from the billions of Android users from 190 different countries downloading apps from the store every day. The top 5 countries getting app-happy come mostly from Asia, with South Korea topping the list, followed by Hong Kong and Taiwan. The United States comes in at third place followed by Singapore.

And the most downloaded categories are not surprisingly, games and entertainment, with games taking up 25.6% of all downloads, followed by entertainment at 12.2%.But the biggest winner of all apps is no game, but the picture and video sharing app Photobucket Mobile. Getting the 10 billionth spot, Chu says the popular app will receive “a great prize package, including tickets to next year’s Google I/O developer conference.”

Android Setting up Shop Down Under

The Android Market’s 10 billion apps success comes only days after another milestone, the opening of Android’s very first retail store, Androidland, which opened last December 2 in Melbourne. The store was the result of a collaboration between Telstra and Google, and features various Android devices for people to try all under one roof, a first since Android devices are usually sold in third-party retail stores. The store also has many quirky and fun features, including giant touchscreens for people to play apps in and of course, huge Android statues. Customers can “fly” through Google Earth and try out phones and tablets from Samsung, Motorola, HTC or LG while at the store.

According to an article on news.com, the store is not expected to generate much revenue, but is intended more for the education of customers on “how the Android platform works and which devices suit them best.” It is possible as well that the store is simply another means to promote the brand and boost online marketing of apps, though given their current success, it doesn’t really seem all that necessary.
